She introduced the officers and level coordinators. Secretary, Christine Denniston, called the roll of club representatives. The minutes from the 2007 spring meeting were approved. Treasurer, Jeannine Williams, announced the division winners and runners-up from last season, and showed the prizes that they will receive. Vice-President, Lacy Sparks, announced that schedules will be official next Monday. She discussed several problems that occurred with teams not making deadlines. The board voted to extend the registration period to one month prior to the deadline. In addition, the board voted to charge a late fee of $80 per team for late registration, which is double the registration fee. No more traveling teams will be added at this time. Anniston CC, Musgrove CC and Tuscaloosa currently are allowed traveling teams. Chase Lake was allowed a traveling team for part of this coming season only due to loss of courts during this season. Also, Lacy mentioned that USTA leagues may have some matches that overlap with the first week of Softcourt matches, which is unavoidable. USTA has priority to the courts and some Softcourt matches may have to be rescheduled, if problems occur. Susan Filippini announced that the directories are here. She had several topics that have arisen regarding rules to discuss for new business. 1. Currently, all players on a team’s roster do not have to be listed in the singles strength roster. After discussion, the board voted to change the rule so that now all players on the team roster must be listed on the singles strength roster. 2. Another topic was that players currently can “swap” positions and the discussion was about forcing the #1 player on the singles strength roster to play the #1 position and not allow her to “swap” positions with the # 2 player. After discussion on this topic, the board voted to keep the rule as it is to continue to allow “swapping” at all positions. Then the board discussed adding a rule to require the level coordinator to be informed of this “swapping” when is involves the #1 position. The board voted that “swapping” with any position does not require that the team captain notify the coordinator. This rule regarding “swapping” positions, including court 1, will not be changed. 3. Next, the discussion changed to the doubles portion of the strength roster. Our current rule allows for only one person to be listed in a position on the strength roster. A question was raised during the last season about this practice since most captains list two people as a team at each position. Past-president, Anise Freidman, stated that over the past two years several teams have only listed one person in a doubles position. After much discussion, the board voted that all positions on the doubles strength roster should have two names listed. Anise Freidman discussed the “open division”. This new division was recently created when two teams had won their divisions 3 times in a row. Our rules state that when this occurs, the softcourt president will meet with the pro at the club of the team involved and discuss the options. Anise and Bob Ciannetti decided to exclude the 5.0 USTA players on that team from that 5.3 team and ask them to play in the new open division. Only those 5.0 USTA players are not allowed to play on their 5.3 team at this time. Softcourt has a rule that states that 5.0 USTA players are allowed to play on 5.3 teams within softcourt. Jeannine distributed the treasurer’s report and reminded the club representatives to take the prizes and directories to their clubs to distribute, and reminded the officers and level coordinators to take their gifts. Several door prizes were awarded. The meeting adjourned at 11:45am. |
